The Tuscaloosa Public Projects Committee approved a batch of minor public-works contracts and a contract change order covering neighborhood infrastructure, park art, elevator access controls and safety upgrades.
City staff presented a deductive balancing change order to the 2024 corrugated metal pipe (CMP) lining contract with Video Industrial Services, described in the meeting as a lateral rehabilitation project along the west side of Greensboro Avenue. Staff said the work addressed a sidewalk cave-in and that the change reduced the contract by a figure the presenter described as roughly $27,000.
The committee also approved a design, fabrication and installation contract not to exceed $25,000 with artist Steve Davis for artwork at Burrell Odom Park; the contract was recommended to the committee by the Public Arts Advisory Committee. Tim, a city staff presenter, said the public-arts committee and other city departments reviewed the proposal and that staff checked camera/visibility concerns with police and IT.
Other approvals included a minor public-works contract with Vision Security Technologies to install card readers inside multiple City Hall Annex elevator cars to control access to nonpublic floors, a $9,924.69 contract with Struggles Recreation to repair or replace playground equipment at Carlton Park damaged by a fallen tree (staff said insurance will reimburse the city less a deductible), an $79,387 contract with Amason and Associates for Annex 1 ADA and life-safety corridor upgrades (fire hose connection changes, extinguisher cabinet relocation, corridor patching and lighting), and a $7,353 contract to add gutter and a canopy to the existing gym building at Fire Station Number 6.
Staff also presented a scope expansion and change order for Rotolo Consultants to expand ground-maintenance coverage on Fifth Eighth Street and other parcels, with the change order amount noted as approximately $26,398.39. Councilors debated contractor performance and asked staff to hold contractors accountable for regular mowing schedules; one councilor said a new Rotolo project manager had improved operations.
All items were approved by voice vote during the meeting.
The approvals include several amounts charged to city capital or maintenance accounts; staff said some work (playground repair) will be reimbursed through insurance and that elevator and Annex upgrades are funded from security and ADA/life-safety budgets.
