The Richmond Heights City Council Committee of the Whole voted June 10 to award CMG Construction a $134,740 contract to perform earthwork and site preparation for a new public-works salt-storage building.
Council members approved the contract after staff described the site, bid results and plans to screen the facility from the street. The work is intended to prepare a new, larger salt bin at the city service complex so service trucks can load more easily and to meet current containment practices.
City officials said the project received four bids, with the low bid at $134,740 and the high bid at $189,000. Marianne (staff member) told the committee, “It's gonna be on the current location of this of the service complex. It's gonna be in front of the existing salt bin. It will be running parallel with Chardon View,” and said staff plans to add a berm and trees and a fence on the east side to screen the structure from the street and neighboring homes.
Council members discussed operational benefits for the service department and truck drivers. A staff speaker explained the new opening will face the northeast so trucks will not have to back into a tight area, and staff said the city will continue to use salt from the existing bin until the new bin is operational. Staff also said they are pursuing grant funding to demolish the old bin and hope that can happen within about a year.
The resolution accepting CMG Construction's bid and authorizing a contract was introduced by Mayor Thomas and Councilwoman Lewis. The committee voted to approve the contract; recorded votes at the meeting showed President Jordan, Councilmember Nelson, Councilmember Robinson, Councilmember Silver and Councilmember Ursu voting yes. The motion passed and the city said it sought the vote to secure CMG Construction's schedule so work can begin promptly.
Staff gave basic site-orientation details at the meeting; the committee did not set a construction start date in the public discussion. Next steps are for staff to finalize the contract and place the work on the contractor's schedule.
