The Belton City Council approved Resolution 2025‑54 to purchase 12 SIG Sauer M400 rifles from Sentinel Supply for the Belton Police Department. Council members voted to adopt the resolution during the meeting.
Chief Scott Lyons told the council the purchase would replace rifles “that have been in service since 02/2005” and that the vendor quote was about $13,000 with a trade‑in value just under $12,000. He said the vendor was selected because it could handle the required trade‑in disposal procedures under federal firearms rules administered by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
“Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives regulates firearms across the board,” Lyons said, explaining the department must use a Class 4 dealer to account for and destroy certain parts from automatic weapons being traded in. He added the department is shifting the SWAT team to semi‑automatic weapons and that the vendor can both supply the rifles and remove or destroy regulated components per ATF requirements.
Council members asked whether the purchase was planned in the budget; Lyons said the purchase was included in the budget but the city had to rebid after the originally presented vendor could not complete the full transaction. The motion carried on a council vote.
