The Mecklenburg County Board of Supervisors approved several routine and administrative items at its June 2025 meeting, including special-exception permits, personnel appointments, an infrastructure contract and a revision to the county transient-occupancy tax ordinance.
Key board actions at the meeting included acceptance of a $2,739,777 bid for the Highway 92 intersection improvement project from Haman Brothers Incorporated; adoption of an updated transient-occupancy (short-term rental) ordinance that aligns county code with a 2025 change in state law concerning which parties remit the tax; approval of special-exception permits for two separate applications by Melvin Crutchfield to construct two recreational-vehicle sites on agricultural parcels in Election District 3; and approval of a special-exception permit for a 250-foot communications tower application by Telecom 6-B LLC on Old Cox Road (Election District 7).
Personnel and administrative votes included appointing Josh Tanner as Mecklenburg County zoning administrator effective July 1, 2025, and authorizing creation of a new position in the Clerk of the Circuit Court’s office under legislative changes passed by the Virginia General Assembly; both actions were reported out of committee and approved by the full board. The board also approved a resolution honoring Donna Simmons for 30 years of service in Mecklenburg County Emergency Communications.
Other committee items approved or recommended: the economic-development committee recommended accepting Haman Brothers’ low bid for Highway 92 intersection improvements; the board carried that recommendation. The board also unanimously approved a resolution asking the federal delegation to retain tobacco and tobacco products within the federal Duty Drawback Program, a measure sponsored by Supervisor Kirk Gravatt and adopted by voice vote.
The updated transient-occupancy ordinance reorganizes language from state code into the county code, clarifies the commission/assessment standards for unpaid or fraudulent filings and does not change the county’s tax rate. County staff said the change will make enforcement and potential prosecution clearer if a provider or property owner willfully withholds taxes.
Votes reported without a named mover were taken by voice vote where the record shows “All in favor, say aye” and “The motion carries.” Several items were recorded by roll call where noted in the minutes.
