Parent describes son's cannabis-induced psychosis, urges Pearland ISD to provide THC education

During the public-comment portion of the June 10 Pearland Independent School District board meeting, Christine Scruggs told trustees about her son's experience with high-potency THC and urged the district to provide student and parent education about related risks.
"My son did not start using THC until after college graduation at the age of 22 ... within 8 months, he was using everyday and was addicted. He developed symptoms of psychosis, which are delusions, paranoia and hallucinations. ... He was diagnosed with cannabis induced psychosis or CIP," Scruggs told trustees. She described a lengthy outpatient and residential treatment episode and said her son's therapist warned he was "lucky not to have converted to a long term diagnosis such as bipolar, schizoaffective or schizophrenia."
Scruggs criticized industry messaging and described greater potency in available products: "What used to be 2 to 3% potency is in the 60s and 70s ... concentrates going over 90% potency. They are addictive and causing symptoms of psychosis." (Transcript phrasing corrected to match standard potency reporting.) She said she had sought district outreach and described an offer from a presenter, Laura Stack of Johnny's Ambassadors, who had presented free programs in other Houston-area districts; Scruggs said Pearland ISD did not respond to her inquiry in 2023 and redirected her in 2024.
"Pearland ISD students and families deserve the best education on this topic," Scruggs said, urging trustees to learn about the dangers of high-potency THC products and to support legislation and education that "saves lives and futures of Texans." She left materials for trustees and asked the board to consider bringing a presenter to the district.
The board did not take action during public comment; the transcript shows Dr. Berger acknowledged the comment and the public-comment period concluded before the meeting proceeded to a scheduled public hearing and consent items.
