Verona students, artist unveil storm-drain mural to highlight stormwater pollution

City of Verona officials said a storm-drain mural painted June 6, 2025, at the corner of Whelan Road and Military Ridge Drive aims to teach residents that stormwater runoff carries trash, chemicals and sediment into local rivers and streams.
The project was created by artist Sonia Sankaran with participation from Glacier Edge Elementary School students and in partnership with the Madison Area Municipal Storm Water Partnership and the Dane County Land and Water Resources Department. The city said the mural is intended to raise awareness of how everyday actions affect local waterways.
Glacier Edge teacher Nikki Borchardt said, "This was a wonderful opportunity for our students to wrap up their grade school year. They've learned how small solutions can lead to big changes."
A City of Verona staff member said, "This mural allowed them to use their voice and their art to make a real difference in our community." The staff member noted the painted storm drain sits near Glacier Edge Elementary and Tolleson Park and encouraged residents to view the work.
The city asked residents to remember that "what goes down the drain ends up in our waters," and to take simple steps to keep storm drains free of trash and pollutants.
