Fort Atkinson Middle School celebrates eighth-grade promotion; scholarships and academic awards presented

At a promotion ceremony at Fort Atkinson Middle School, Principal Matt Wolf and Fort Atkinson School District Superintendent Dr. Rob Abbott congratulated the school’s eighth-grade class and presented academic awards and scholarships, including the Fred and Helen Rose Inspire a Dream scholarship.

The event recognized student achievement across homerooms, named 22 students for the school’s academic excellence award (a cumulative grade-point average of 3.94 or higher through the third quarter) and named scholarship recipients who will receive $2,000 toward postsecondary enrollment. "It's truly an honor to stand before you today as we celebrate the promotion of our incredible grade students," Principal Matt Wolf said. Dr. Rob Abbott told students, "This is, in fact, whether or not you know it, a milestone that is not just the end of middle school. It is, in fact, the beginning of something new."

Why it matters: promotion ceremonies mark the transition to high school for the district’s eighth graders and highlight individual academic achievement and community-supported scholarships that help students plan for college or vocational training.

Most of the ceremony consisted of homeroom recognitions, where teachers called student names and students were acknowledged on stage. The school announced that 22 students met the academic-excellence threshold; teachers then joined the stage to present certificates. Among students named during the recognition were Ellie Rekob, Maggie Madler, Magdalena Farrow, Larissa Roy, Sophie Klapcic, Hannah Hesselbacher, Angelica Middlebrooks, Alex Zeissler, Ava Kron, Tempe Naber, Elijah Barr, Eve Oakley, Keaton Shard, Aubrey Keller, William Schrader, Kiefer Anderson, Shauna Ebert, Maggie Frederick, Alex Lukke, Anderson Dunford, Claire Fast and Kendall Ricketts. The school characterized the 22 recipients as having achieved a cumulative grade-point average of 3.94 or higher through the third quarter.

Jennifer Walden, principal of Rockwell Elementary School, presented the Fred and Helen Rose Inspire a Dream scholarship alongside other elementary principals. According to Walden’s remarks, the scholarship began in 2007 as a $500 award for an eighth-grade student who demonstrated academic success, community service and character; the award has since been expanded and is now presented to multiple recipients. The ceremony named recipients from the district’s elementary schools: Maggie Mather (Rockwell Elementary), Lara Winn (unnamed school announced as "the very recipient"), Maggie Frederick (Purdy Elementary) and Lacey Jones (Luther School). Walden said each named recipient will receive $2,000 to apply toward enrollment at a two- or four-year institution or a vocational/technical program.

Students also delivered a class-history speech reflecting on middle-school experiences, including extracurricular activities and field trips. Speakers recalled events such as social-studies trips, the Courage Retreat and recent trips to the Wharton Museum and Noah's Ark water park. The ceremony included remarks thanking teachers, families and staff for their support and encouragement.

The program closed with general congratulations and a charge to the students as they prepare to enter Fort Atkinson High School. "So go out there and truly make your mark on the world. Thank you and congratulations once again," one speaker said as the ceremony concluded.
