Sydney mayor reads resignation and council votes to enter closed session on contract negotiations

Mayor Rob announced his resignation at the City of Sydney council meeting on June 10 and read a written letter saying his resignation is effective the same day.

In his remarks the mayor thanked city staff and residents, said he had served on the city council for over six years and had lived in Sydney for 18 years, and provided his phone number for contact. After making the announcement he asked the council for a motion to go into closed session to discuss contract negotiations and personnel.

Councilmember Burke moved to enter closed session for those subjects, a motion seconded by Bondegaard. The council voted unanimously on a roll call (Kirkman, Jones/Koons, Sherman, Radcliffe and Bondegaard recorded as yes) and entered closed session.

The council recorded the formal resignation letter into the record and agreed to consider the personnel and contract items in closed session. The mayor’s resignation and the closed-session motion were recorded on the meeting minutes; the council returned to closed session immediately following the public portion of the meeting. No personnel or contract outcomes were disclosed in the public record during the June 10 session.
