Newfields safety committee prioritizes crosswalks, traffic flow, ADA access and signage at school

Committee members and school staff spent their meeting cataloging safety and access problems at Newfields School, then prioritized immediate concerns for a recommendation to the school board.

The group identified the intersection of Route 87 and the school driveway, multiple pedestrian crossings on and off school property, and conflicting traffic flows as the top safety risks. They also flagged faded or missing signage, undefined parking areas, limited emergency-vehicle access, and inadequate, inconvenient ADA access from the main approach.

Why it matters: those conditions can slow emergency response, create repeated pedestrian–vehicle conflict points and leave people with mobility impairments dependent on circuitous routes to enter the building. Committee members said the issues affect teachers, students, parents and visitors and will affect any future school expansion.
