The Central Unified Board of Trustees unanimously appointed Dr. Mark Marshall as the district’s next superintendent and approved a three-year employment agreement that begins July 1, 2025.
The action, taken at the June 10 meeting after a closed-session public employee appointment report, followed a motion by Trustee Sellers and a second by Trustee Kurfon and passed 7–0. The contract calls for an annual salary of $270,000, an annual continuing-education allowance of $6,000 and a relocation reimbursement not to exceed $10,000.
Why it matters: Central Unified is transitioning from an interim superintendent to a permanent leader and the contract sets compensation and a start date that will govern district leadership as the board and new superintendent address the 2025–26 budget and operating priorities.
At the meeting, Dr. Marshall thanked the board and said he was “really looking forward to working with you and accomplishing great things in Central Unified.” He added that he is moving into the community and intends to “listen and learn” as he begins the role.
Board President Singh reported the formal closed-session report to the public and noted the vote tally. Trustee Sellers made the motion to appoint Dr. Marshall and Trustee Kurfon seconded; there were no dissents or abstentions.
Discussion and next steps: The board returned to open session and approved the employment agreement; the item includes the salary and allowances listed above and confirms the July 1, 2025 effective date. The board did not change other contract terms at the meeting. Administration and the new superintendent will proceed with transition activities and onboarding over the next weeks.
The board handles superintendent employment matters under state open-meeting law and reported the required information in open session following closed-session deliberations.
