LaSalle County board approves side letter adding Juneteenth and MLK Day to State's Attorney holiday schedule

The LaSalle County Board approved a side letter agreement with the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) Council 31, Local 978 to add Juneteenth and Martin Luther King Jr. Day as paid holidays for employees of the LaSalle County State's Attorney's Office.
County staff told the board the change aligns the State's Attorney's Office with holidays recognized by the Illinois Supreme Court and with local court closures. "Therefore, it is operationally appropriate for that office to follow the same holiday calendar," a staff member read during the meeting.
The board record states the broader collective bargaining agreement covering AFSCME Council 31, Local 978 and LaSalle County runs from Dec. 1, 2023, through Nov. 30, 2027, and was executed June 10, 2024. The side letter amends the contract’s holidays provision to add Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday and Juneteenth to the schedule of regular paid holidays for employees of the State's Attorney's Office; the side letter takes effect on the date set forth in the agreement.
The board voted to approve the side letter on a motion by Mr. Aubrey, seconded by Mr. Torres. The roll call vote recorded 25 ayes and 1 nay (Mr. Blue); the motion carried.
Earlier in the meeting the board exited an executive session on collective bargaining matters under 5 ILCS 120/2(c) of the Illinois Open Meetings Act before taking the vote on the side letter. The board then moved on to miscellaneous correspondence and routine business.
The meeting record also shows the board set its next session for July 10, 2025, at 1 p.m. in Room 250 and a county staff member solicited volunteers to staff a lemonade stand at the 4-H fair.
