The Homewood City Council voted June 9 to establish an ad hoc committee to plan events honoring the city’s centennial in 2026.
Council members discussed the need to form a committee quickly to coordinate a yearlong series of events, with participation sought from the Historic Preservation Commission, the Beautification Board and the Chamber of Commerce. "We have a lot to celebrate," a councilor said when introducing the item, and members discussed possible events including a house tour, concerts and a citywide picnic in the fall.
Councilors indicated funding for the centennial will be part of the normal budgetary process. "That that's gonna be part of the budgetary process," one councilor said; specific dollar amounts or a formal budget allocation were not included at the meeting.
A motion to establish the ad hoc centennial committee passed unanimously (10‑0). Councilors asked staff and liaisons to solicit nominations and stakeholder input and to return with a proposed membership list and suggested event schedule for future meetings.
The council also suggested involving the Beautification Board and the Historic Preservation Commission in planning; several members said they already had preliminary lists of potential participants and ideas for timeline and programming.
