West Des Moines hires Newmark for economic development strategic action plan

The West Des Moines City Council voted May 19 to approve a professional consulting agreement with Newmark Company Real Estate Inc. to prepare an Economic Development Strategic Action Plan.
Council members said the study comes at a time of economic uncertainty but argued a strategic plan will help the city pursue revenue opportunities, protect its fiscal footing and support public services. The contract includes scope items outlined by the City’s economic development director; staff provided a memorandum on the dais summarizing outstanding items related to scope and deliverables.
Council members who have served on regional economic organizations—some of whom abstained from related consent items because of board service—expressed support for a coordinated regional approach and said the Newmark work should help refine the city’s use of incentives, redevelopment tools and project selection criteria.
The resolution authorizing the professional services agreement passed on a unanimous vote. City staff said Newmark will coordinate with the City’s economic development director and other departments and will return deliverables on a timeline to be set in the contract.
