Monthly updates: parks staff said two basins at Furman Aquatic Center are ready but a leak in the lazy river prevented opening; Miracle League baseball opened for players with disabilities; Olive's Garden & Greenhouse donated flowers for volunteer planting.
Parks staff reported on May 15 that two of three basins at Furman Aquatic Center are ready but a leak in the lazy river prevented immediate opening. Staff said contractors will be on-site to locate and repair the leak; until the leak is fixed the lazy river water remained cloudy and staff could not safely open the feature.
Explaining the decision, a parks staff member said that when the basin was filled and circulation began staff “could not see the bottom of the lazy river.” Because staff could not visually clear the water, they did not open the feature for public safety.
Staff also highlighted community programs and volunteers: Olive’s Garden and Greenhouse donated flowers for the Adopt-a-Flower program (more than 40 beds planted annually), and volunteers were completing plantings this week. The Miracle League opening day took place last weekend; staff described the program as a baseball league adapted for youth and adults with physical or intellectual disabilities, with community “buddies” assisting each player. Staff invited volunteers and groups to help at Miracle League games through June 21 at Merrick League Field in Inus Grove.
Commissioners praised the community garden turnout and new playground equipment and noted several grand-opening plans for summer amenities. Staff encouraged residents to contact parks staff if they want to volunteer at Miracle League events or help with garden beds.
No formal policy changes were proposed in the monthly report segment; the items were informational and operational updates.
