The Fulton City Council approved a $5,000 contribution to the Fulton Founders Day committee to support bicentennial events and a planned 4-by-4-foot granite monument commemorating Fulton's founding in 1825.
Bruce Hackman, speaking for the Founders Day committee, described the monument as listing the names of original landowners and showing a historic map of the original 147 lots. "We have commissioned a 4 by 4 foot, granite monument...which will commemorate Fulton's founding and will honor the original landowners," Hackman said.
Council members said funding for the contribution is already allocated in the city's budget under the special projects line. "Yes. This will come from the special projects line," a council member confirmed when asked.
A motion to approve the $5,000 contribution passed by voice vote. Council members praised the volunteer committee's work and said the monument will be a long-term public marker for the bicentennial celebration planned for Aug. 1.
Council discussion included logistics around event location and moving the ceremony indoors to the Bridal District Playhouse because of summer heat; no additional city financial commitments were specified beyond the approved $5,000.
