Charlestown Council asks solicitor to draft language removing ban on metal buildings in mixed-use overlay

The Charlestown Town Council on June 9 voted unanimously to ask the town solicitor to draft language removing a sentence that bars metal buildings or metal-sided buildings within the town’s mixed-use zoning overlay (MUZ), zoning code 218-47, item 6.
Councilor Sarah explained the change would apply only to the mixed-use overlay district and not to the town’s TVD zone. She said roughly a dozen lots in the overlay (approximately 12 parcels in the Integrity Park area) could be affected; she described the area as containing boat storage, the ambulance building and parcels near the police station. Sarah said current ordinance language reads that ‘‘no metal buildings or metal sided buildings are permitted within this mixed use district.’’
Councilor Sarah moved that the solicitor draft language to remove that sentence from 218-47(6). Councilor Marr seconded the motion. Attorney Petrarca said the office would draft the language and attempt to return it at the council’s second June meeting; the council noted the draft would then follow the normal advertising and public-notice process. The motion passed 4–0.
Council members emphasized the drafting step is procedural; any actual permit or construction would be subject to subsequent review, public notice and applicable standards.
