CHARLESTOWN, R.I. — The Charlestown Town Council on May 27 approved placing two "Please keep off the dune" signs at the Town Beach, accepting the Climate Resiliency Commission's request and a Coastal Resources Management Council (CRMC) letter of authorization dated May 8, 2025.
Councilor Marr moved to approve placement of two signs, with two amendments: remove the DEM and Rhode Island State Parks logos from the draft and replace them with the Town of Charlestown logo and the Charlestown Climate Resiliency Commission logo. Councilor Sarah seconded the motion. The council approved the motion unanimously, 5'0to'0.
The CRMC authorization limits the request to two signs at the Town Beach; the Climate Resiliency Commission had initially requested signs at several locations but was authorized for two signs no larger than two square feet. Councilors said the town administrator had coordinated with CRMC about logo placement and confirmed the town's logo would be acceptable.
The signs are intended to protect dune habitat and reduce erosion by keeping foot traffic off sensitive dune areas. The council asked town staff to proceed under CRMC requirements and to finalize artwork with the approved local logos.
