CHARLESTOWN, R.I. — The Charlestown Town Council on May 27 accepted the retirement of Alan Arsenault as director of public works, effective July 4, 2025, with a unanimous vote and expressions of thanks for 44 years of service.
Councilors read a letter dated May 13 from Arsenault in which he gave formal notice of his intention to retire effective July 4 and thanked the town. Councilor Stokes moved to accept the retirement "with regret," including a formal thanks for his long tenure; Councilor Sarah seconded the motion. The vote was unanimous, 5'0to'0.
Councilors said the town will present a customary proclamation and gift at a later date. The council did not take personnel action beyond accepting the notice and scheduling a future ceremonial recognition.
The retirement will create a vacancy in the department; the town will follow normal hiring and succession procedures to fill the director role. The meeting record notes that a proclamation and gift will be prepared closer to Arsenault's final day.
