Oak Creek — The Board put on hold a proposal to install two-hour parking signs on West Oakwood Road adjacent to Oakwood Rest Cemetery after engineering staff failed to consult the police department and police raised enforcement concerns.
Engineering staff told the board they had not reached out to the police before preparing the item and the police department expressed concerns that enforcing a two-hour limit would be burdensome. One nearby resident, who identified a property address as 1241 East Summers Drive, asked whether the cemetery could place “cemetery parking only” signs on its own fence as a short-term measure to deter overflow parking during funerals. The resident said the primary concern was during funerals and that the fence sign would be a private deterrent rather than an enforceable public restriction.
Board members agreed to hold the item until the July meeting so staff can coordinate with police and develop a compromise solution. A motion to put item No. 10 on hold was made and seconded and the board recorded the roll call accordingly.
Engineering staff said they would work with the police department to identify an approach that can be enforced or reasonably deter parking during funeral events.
