Director updates: splash pad daily ops, Fort Nugent repairs, turf installation and urban forestry planning

Parks and Recreation staff provided a series of operational updates at the June 9 commission meeting, including changes to splash pad operations, playground repairs, turf work, graffiti cleanup and progress on an urban forestry plan.
Splash pad: staff reported receiving an emailed public comment that children had been blocking drains at the splash pad to make shallow pools, and that smaller children and parents were concerned about that behavior. Staff said the splash pad is not lifeguarded and is “use at your own risk.” Parks staff changed the splash pad activator so the feature flows only when in use, and announced the splash pad is open daily for the summer season. Commissioners asked staff to monitor the drain‑blocking behavior and to evaluate whether additional maintenance or operational rules are needed.
Playground and repairs: Fort Nugent’s damaged double slide was removed and replaced with a climber that is open to the public. Staff reported they will attempt a multi‑component urethane grip sealant on the playground ramp to address slippery ramps; the work is tentatively scheduled to close part of the playground for one day this week so it can open before the end of the school year.
Fields and maintenance: staff said turf installation at Flintstone Park is settling in; crews completed boulder installations and resolved irrigation repairs. Staff also reported ongoing graffiti removal near the skate park and efforts to improve camera access for enforcement. South Avenue tree plantings were finished.
Urban forestry and reporting: staff submitted GIS and background data to Planet Geo for the city’s urban forestry management plan and are revising internal ArcGIS datasets to accept new tree inventory entries. Staff also prepares a monthly parks report for the council administrative packet; the June report will accompany the department’s annual update at the June 17 council workshop.
Staff requested commissioner assistance for upcoming events and volunteer needs, including the June 28 Mermaids & Pirates event and Camp Windjammer activities. No formal votes were taken on operations updates.
