Resident urges board to raise concerns about planned fuel station near Landon Middle School

A West Hills resident, Brooke Shugart, asked the Board of Education to share her emailed letter with city council members and district families about a proposed fuel station at the corner of Sixth and Fairlawn. Shugart said she lives near Landon Middle School and has two children who will attend district schools.
In the read letter Shugart expressed concerns that the new station would increase uncontrolled traffic through the school zone, bring drivers unfamiliar with the area, and create hazards for after‑school programs that run near the Governor's Mansion course. "This fuel station would add more traffic, including more people from out of the area that are not looking for children," the letter reads. Shugart also raised fears that the site could create opportunities for kidnappers or traffickers to access children because it provides quick access to multiple highways.
Shugart wrote that she has raised her concerns with city council members and said their vote on the development is scheduled for June 17, 2025. She requested the school board forward her email and encourage families to contact the council; the letter included an email contact supplied by the writer for council members.
The board accepted the public communication as submitted and moved on to other agenda items; no board action was taken on the development request at this meeting.
