Blue Valley dissolves six advisory committees, creates three to align with strategic plan

The Blue Valley Board of Education voted unanimously on June 9 to dissolve the district’s existing advisory committees for communications, facility planning, curriculum and instruction, health and well-being, student activities and DEI and to replace them with three new committees aligned to the district strategic plan.
Deputy Superintendent Kyle Hayden outlined the recommendation to merge facilities and finance into a single Finance and Operations committee, to combine curriculum/activities under Academics and Activities, and to create a Community committee covering health and well-being and DEI. Hayden said communications will be integrated across the three new committees.
Hayden said the change is intended to better align committee work with the district strategic plan, to “beef up” patron participation and to add more patrons and potentially more students to committee membership. He outlined the planned next steps: notify existing committee members within two to three weeks, then open applications to the public and appoint members on a timeline similar to prior years (the board seeks a reasonable committee size by the September meeting). Terms will remain two years.
Board member Jim McMullen moved to dissolve the six existing committees; Patrick Hurley seconded. The motion to dissolve passed 7–0. A subsequent motion to approve the three new advisory committees (Finance & Operations, Academics & Activities, Community) also passed 7–0.
Kyle Hayden said the board will use principals and currently involved parents in the initial committee membership selection process to ensure continuity. Staff will post application information and the committee descriptions to the district website once current patrons confirm whether they want to transition.
