Commissioners approve Parks Board appointments but remove one appointee pending Parks Board interview

Peter Craig, who identified himself as chair of the Parks Advisory Board, addressed the commissioners during public comment and said he had been misrepresented in internal emails about the appointment process. "This is a lie. No effort from Mr. Crawford was made to check on this information," Craig said regarding an email he described as mischaracterizing his position on applicants. Craig asked that the process remain open in order to allow the Parks Board to interview candidates rather than have appointments pushed through without that step.
County staff explained that county code allows multiple nomination routes (the Parks Board, staff or individual commissioners) and that the Parks Board had considered candidates previously. A letter from a Parks Advisory Board member requested a short delay to meet one candidate; in response the board amended the resolution to remove the sentence appointing Glenn Shipman so the Parks Board could interview him and then returned to complete the appointment process.
Action and vote: The board voted to approve the appointments as amended; the motion to remove the sentence appointing Glenn Shipman passed by voice vote and was recorded in the minutes as unanimous. Commissioners encouraged the Parks Advisory Board to schedule the interview promptly.
Next steps: Staff and the Parks Advisory Board will arrange for the requested interview of the candidate and report back to the commissioners with the Parks Board’s recommendation.
