Middle and high school coaches report strong extracurricular participation and equipment investments

Daniel Morgan presenters said the middle school offers seasonal teams (girls basketball, football, cheerleading and cross country in fall; boys basketball, wrestling, cheer and volleyball in winter; outdoor track and field in spring) and a set of JV opportunities hosted at the high school for eligible students. The school lists clubs including forensics, math counts, robotics, SGA, drama, choir, band and color guard. Presenters said staffing to sponsor clubs is a recurring challenge. Daniel Morgan reported about 272 students completed required physicals and cited 247 athletic participations for the year (the figure counts students who participated in multiple activities). The middle school said it spent about $10,000 on apparel this year (largely to replace football uniforms), roughly $5,000 on transportation drivers/fuel, about $15,000 on equipment including larger items and $13,000 on officials and referees. Daniel Morgan added assistant coach positions this year to improve coverage.
School leaders described the soccer offering as a highly requested item in student surveys; presenters explained the difference between a club (open to any eligible student) and a tryout-based JV or school team (limited roster, scheduled games). Staff said spring is the most feasible season for a middle‑school soccer team to align with high school competition and allow multi‑sport participation.
John Hanley High School staff reported a broad extracurricular program, including VHSL (Virginia High School League) activities. Presenters said Hanley had about 451 student athletes (not counting multi‑sport athletes twice), 28 clubs and strong overall participation across sports and activities. The high school reported a policy that John Hanley students are admitted free to school athletic events to increase attendance and school spirit. Hanley staff listed recent facility investments — new speaker systems, weight room floor, gym paint and planned wrestling mat replacement — and highlighted community booster support from the Judges Athletic Association (JAA). Presenters told the board JAA awarded more than $70,000 in college scholarships this year, contributed roughly $20,000–$25,000 annually toward equipment, and provided a $75,000 donation toward track renovation.
Board members and staff discussed coordination between middle- and high-school coaches to support athlete development and asked about neighboring schools' middle‑school offerings. Hanley staff said flag football (club/league models) and additional club opportunities are being explored. No formal board action was requested at the meeting.
