School staff recommend Mathspace digital adoption for grades 7–12, citing Virginia alignment

A district curriculum committee recommended that Winchester Public Schools adopt Mathspace as the district’s primary digital math resource for grades 7–12, staff told the Chesterfield School Board at its June 9 work session.
Committee members favor Mathspace primarily because it is aligned to Virginia’s standards and integrates Desmos tools, which the reviewers said reduces the need for teachers to “flip” between platforms. The committee’s scoring and a preference poll produced a clear edge for Mathspace over the alternate vendor, Kiddom.
The district recommended digital-only access for the seven-year subscription; the proposal presented to the board shows an estimated cost of about $130,000 for that period. The recommended package includes student and teacher digital licenses, professional development and an on-platform AI “help” chatbot. District staff said both vendors are already approved by the State Board of Education, which removes a separate state adoption step and eases procurement requirements.
Staff emphasized that the recommendation covers grades 7–12 only at this time; committee members decided to continue investigating an appropriate option for grade 6 before returning a recommendation. District presenters also warned the board that full classroom adoption will take time: they expect a pilot and phased rollout with more intensive usage in year two as teachers complete professional development and integrate the platform into course plans.
Next steps described to the board: staff will place the adoption recommendation on a future consent or action agenda so the board may consider local adoption, and the district will monitor teacher uptake and provide updates during the coming year.
