Auditors: emergency rental assistance improper payments remain under federal review; potential $60,199 repayment

Auditors told the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors on June 9, 2025, that a prior-year single-audit finding related to the Emergency Rental Assistance program remains partially corrected while the U.S. Department of the Treasury reviews the county's management response.
Michelle Walters, audit manager, said the finding related to improper payments to applicants in the Emergency Rental Assistance program. The county implemented stronger internal controls to prevent similar improper payments, but until the Treasury provides a management response regarding disallowed costs, the finding remains partially corrected.
Mike McGee (county staff) told the board the amount under review with the federal government is $60,199 and that it is possible the county could be required to repay that amount to the Treasury. Tamara Bridwell, director of Human Services, and Amanda McKeever, Human Services administrator, said the reporting omission identified elsewhere in the audit was corrected in February 2025 and that the Human Services Department has implemented additional procedures to reduce payment errors.
Auditors said they did not identify a new improper-payment finding in FY2024 because Human Services strengthened controls after the earlier errors.
