School board approves $1 million budget amendment, restores prior cuts and confirms staff bonuses

Campbell County School Board members approved a school budget amendment on May 15 that adds roughly $1,000,000 in state funding and reallocates savings to restore previously cut items and cover operating costs.
During the board’s budget discussion, Doctor Stanley explained that the division initially balanced its budget conservatively after shifting state and governor budgets; now that the final state budget is signed, the division is receiving about $1 million in additional basic aid, special-education add-ons and at-risk funding. “So now that we've got our final budget, we've got an additional $1,000,000 ... so we're able to put back that 1% cuts that we had originally done,” he told the board.
Board members discussed how the money was allocated. Stanley said much of the additional funding went to maintenance and utility costs such as electricity and gas, and that the amendment did not add new positions but restored previously trimmed line items. He also confirmed that the budget covers planned compensation increases: the division earlier included a 3% raise and is paying a one-time bonus of $1,000 for full‑time employees and $500 for part‑time employees this year; Stanley said those payments are covered by this year’s budget and will be distributed at the end of the month.
Finance-related line items were also discussed. Stanley said the division realized further savings in insurance after switching from Liberty Mutual to Bancorp; he said worker’s compensation improvements resulted in an additional roughly $30,000 in savings.
Board members repeatedly praised the finance team and administrators for conservative planning and the ability to restore cuts. “A lot of counties and cities really struggle with budgets ... you guys do a great job,” one member said.
The board moved to approve the amendment and the motion carried without recorded opposition.
