Commission approves transfer from fire protection funds, budget adjustment to cover VFIS insurance

The Colfax County Commission approved a resolution transferring carryover from fire protection funds into the general fund to reimburse the county for VFIS insurance expenses covering prior fiscal years. Finance staff said the entries date back to earlier fiscal years and had been moved among line items during prior corrective journal work.

The finance director told commissioners the total transfer was $43,469, which averages roughly $5,433 per department for the fire districts included in the action. Staff said the amounts were carryover funds in each fire department’s cash balance and would not affect the current fiscal year’s budgeted expenditures.

Commissioners then approved a related budget adjustment (Resolution 2025‑48) to move roughly $10,000 from the general fund to address maintenance at the Judicial Center after an incident involving a volunteer fire department at the courthouse. The action split that $10,000 between two line items to foresee emergency expenses through the fiscal year end.

Both resolutions passed on roll call votes. Commissioners asked that staff continue cleaning up Triadic/LGMS accounting entries and contact any department heads for outstanding reconciliation; staff said they were preparing end-of-day reports and further cleanups in the accounting system.
