Select Board approves Queequegs' request to add 24 outdoor seats at 6 Oak St., with conditions

The Nantucket Select Board approved a liquor-license alteration of premises for Queequegs LLC, doing business as Queequegs at 6 Oak Street, to add up to 24 outdoor seats on an adjacent patio, subject to applicable planning, building and licensing conditions.
Amy, licensing staff member, told the board that state policy now makes alteration-of-premises approvals for outdoor patios a local matter and that the town would report the decision to the ABCC. She said the application included layouts and photos and that the planning board approved the proposal on May 15.
Applicant John Keane, representing Queequegs, said the patio space has been vacant for decades and that the proposed outdoor seating mirrors existing table spacing at the restaurant’s other patios. “We’re not trying to cram tables in. We’re not trying to overpopulate the space,” Keane said, adding the plan keeps a single means of egress through the restaurant’s existing host/entrance and will include a gate to preserve privacy for an upstairs apartment.
Board members asked whether neighbors had been notified and whether the change would impede the apartment’s egress. Keane said the planning board outreach had produced a broader notification list and that for this specific application about four or five property owners received notices; he also said the design preserves access for the upstairs resident and includes a gate to maintain privacy.
Select Board member Brooke moved approval with the note that entertainment may not be extended to the new outdoor area and that the approval remains subject to all other applicable permits. The motion passed 3-0, with Chair (Matt) and Select Board members Tom and Brooke voting aye.
Amy and planning staff noted that if the board had safety or spacing concerns it could impose stricter conditions than the planning board or building department, but no additional conditions were added at the time of approval. Any future change that would increase entertainment or alter host/egress arrangements would require a separate amendment.
