County moves to contract Guardian Mortuary for coroner transport; budgeted at $25,000

Columbia County staff presented a proposed contract with Guardian Mortuary Transport for coroner transport services on June 10. The contract will provide transport of decedents from scenes or residences to the morgue or to the regional crime lab when necessary.
Staff said the new coroner has performed many transports in-house, reducing service needs, but the county still requires a vendor for occasions when staff or deputies are unavailable. Previously, some transport had been done by ambulance under the EMS contract, but that tied up emergency resources. The proposed contract would provide dedicated transport and avoid using ambulances on long-scene transports.
Staff said $25,000 is included in the proposed budget for the next fiscal year to cover expected costs. The committee moved the contract recommendation to consent for final approval by the commission.
