Boater group and local boater warn commission new docks may be unsafe and could cost tourism visits

Tim Schwanger said he was contacted by Jamie Hoffey, president of North Coast Offshore, who inspected the city's ramp and new docks and raised safety and durability concerns. Schwanger told the commission that the group, which counts about 325 members, may remove Sandusky from its list of stops if the issues are not addressed. He identified three problems: stabilization posts mounted on the outside of the new docks (which can impede docking), the composite decking feels slippery compared with the old wooden docks, and some cleats and fittings are composite materials that the boating group doubts will hold up.
Schwanger said the group makes multiple visits during the season and that members often spend money at local restaurants. The commission asked staff to research the concerns and promised to respond to Schwanger. No immediate repairs or contract actions were ordered during the meeting; staff said they would review the issues and follow up with the speaker.
The commission directed staff to investigate and report back; no formal motion or vote was recorded on this item.
