Christopher Stragg, Development Director for the city, asked the commission to reclassify the property at 230 West 12th Street from unsafe to safe and habitable after building-division inspections were completed.
Stragg said the property had been brought to the commission’s attention in March 2023 and that owner Mr. Taylor had worked with city staff and the code department to complete the required work. “Staff is requesting approval to reclassify the property located at 230, West Twelfth as a safe, safe and habitable property,” Stragg said during the meeting.
A motion to approve the reclassification was moved and seconded. The commission voted to carry the motion; one commissioner announced an abstention, saying, “Abstain. Mr. Taylor’s a client of mine.” No other votes were recorded against the motion and the chair announced the motion carries.
Why it matters: Reclassification returns the property to the local tax base and ends municipal enforcement steps tied to habitability. The commission’s action followed the process outlined by the city’s municipal code (chapter 235, article 3), as cited by staff in the presentation.
What’s next: The property is considered habitable; staff will record the reclassification and close the active code-enforcement file unless new violations are reported.
