Cottonwood Extension District staff introduce community health and 4‑H programs to commission

Kerner said the district held a community baby shower in April to promote safe sleep; the program distributed portable cribs and sleep sacks provided by a Midwest Energy grant. "We had around 42 participants and 19 vendors," Kerner said, and the group distributed about 30 portable cribs to participants who completed surveys. The district plans to make the event annual and will meet in June to discuss future plans.
Carissa Frazier, the district’s new community health worker (hired May 1), said she will be certified in August and will provide one‑on‑one and group health education, referrals to health and social services, and client navigation. Tamara Robertson, 4‑H youth development agent, reported the district serves more than 200 youth (ages 5–18) and roughly 50 certified volunteers; she highlighted the county fair as a major event for 4‑H members to showcase projects and noted junior scholarship activity for graduating seniors.
Why it matters: The programs provide prenatal education, safe‑sleep resources and youth development opportunities. Kerner said the district is expanding prenatal classes and planning CPR and first‑aid certification opportunities in partnership with county EMS.
