Superintendent highlights Philadelphia trip, retirees luncheon and $178,000 in local scholarships

The superintendent opened the Rockland School Committee meeting on Monday, June 9 with a summary of recent district events, highlighting a student Philadelphia trip, a large retirees luncheon and $178,000 in scholarships awarded to graduates.

“The Philadelphia trip was incredible for the students,” the superintendent said, praising chaperones and staff who organized the event. The superintendent noted strong community support across multiple events and thanked volunteers and staff who helped run end-of-year activities.

The superintendent told the committee the district’s retirees luncheon drew 82 retirees and singled out Noel Novio for leading much of the event’s organization. On graduation, the superintendent said the class received $178,000 in scholarship money contributed by the local community, and described that total as an unusual and meaningful level of support for students entering college.

The superintendent also described an instructional emphasis on transitions — helping students move from one grade or school level to the next — and recounted multiple transition activities during May and June, including kindergarten tours and grade-level visits. He recommended continued family engagement around transitions to help students and parents adjust to academic and social changes.

Public-service announcements that followed included reminders about upcoming eighth-grade step-up ceremonies, end-of-year finals and library summer programming.

No new policies or budget changes were proposed during the superintendent’s report; the comments were delivered as informational updates to the committee and public.
