Shippensburg reports strong kindergarten turnout after new single‑day screening; about 212 students registered so far

Shippensburg Area School District shifted its kindergarten screening to a single “welcome to kindergarten” event on the last day of school and reported substantially higher family participation compared with prior years, administrators told the board on June 16.

Doctor Dennott (staff) described the change: families met principals, nurses and district staff while children attended a short classroom activity assessed by kindergarten teachers on transition skills and behavior. “Typically, we have about 60% of the families come to the kindergarten screening events. This time, we had around 85% to 90% participation of our expected kindergarteners,” Dennott said.

Superintendent Terry August added that district office staff — singled out by name for outreach work — helped boost enrollment. At the meeting, the administration reported about 212 kindergarten registrations so far and said it expects another 30–40 added over the summer. Officials said the one‑day model reduced staff evening costs and provided stronger early information on incoming students’ needs.

Board members praised the higher turnout and said the approach both saved money and improved the district’s ability to plan classroom placements and supports. Administrators said they plan to replicate the event next year with improvements learned from this year’s experience.
