Student Learning committee outlines ELL staffing additions, summer programs and new diploma requirement

The Student Learning and Growth Committee updated the board on English-language learner staffing increases, high-school and elementary summer programs, IREAD-3 summer testing, and the new personal-finance graduation requirement for incoming freshmen.
Jason Fisher, chair of the Student Learning and Growth Committee, briefed the Warrick County School Corp. Board on staffing and program changes intended to support English-language learners and summer instructional programs.
Fisher said the corporation is adding three ELL (English-language-learner) positions: an ELL educator at Newburgh Elementary (an existing employee transferred into the role), one teacher at Booneville High School who completed the district’s VEIL program to obtain ELL certification and will serve as teacher of record, and an additional ELL teacher of record at Castle High School. Two of the educators are current employees who will add ELL duties to their assignments; the third fill required a posted position and will begin work at the start of the next school year.
Fisher also reported on summer offerings: high-school summer school is being held at Booneville High School and at Castle South Middle School’s Dragon’s Den because the Warrick Education Center is under renovation. Offerings include driver’s education (classroom portion at Booneville), health, U.S. history, economics, government and — for the first time in the district’s history — personal finance, which Fisher said is now a required course for students who were freshmen this year under the new diploma rules the board will discuss at a retreat.
Fisher reviewed IREAD-3 summer-school operations: sessions were held at Oakdale (grade unspecified) and Chandler Elementary (grade unspecified); food services provided breakfast and lunch; transportation challenges arose as testing-window changes reduced a pool of 48 grade-3 students to 18 in a short timeframe; the district organized up to 31 testing rooms on peak days and thanked staff who proctored exams. Fisher said elementary summer programs continue through June 20 and that the committee will review additional testing data at the board retreat.
Board members asked about ELL postings and start dates; Fisher said two teachers are current employees who will serve as ELL teachers of record and the Newburgh position was filled from within and posted for the vacated role. Fisher noted the committee’s next meeting is scheduled for June 24 at 11 a.m.
