Hendry County commissioners on Tuesday authorized county staff to submit a federal grant application to replace the rotating beacon and tower at Airglades Airport and approved a transfer of $85,238 in entitlement funds from La Belle Airport to Airglades to preserve airport entitlement funds.
County Engineer Shane Parker described the project and said the transfer was necessary after the county rejected bids earlier in the fiscal year and did not want to lose the entitlement funding. Parker asked for permission to submit the federal grant application and to sign the usual grant paperwork; staff noted the normal requirement that the county accept grant terms and execute necessary forms if awarded.
Commissioner Michael Glaser moved approval; Commissioner Emery Howard seconded. The board voted unanimously to authorize the application and the transfer.
The action preserves federal entitlement funds and positions the county to replace airport navigation equipment at Airglades Airport while leveraging the county’s airport entitlement balance. Staff said they will return with standard grant acceptance paperwork if the application is successful.
