Board awards Central Northwest renovation and HVAC contracts for high‑school athletic upgrades

The Davenport Community School District board voted to award the Central Northwest High facilities renovation project to Bill Bruce Builders Inc. for $1,864,000 and separately approved a $501,400 contract for HVAC and controls with Trane US Inc. for renovation work at Central, North and West high‑school athletic facilities.
The contracted work includes installation of locker rooms, meeting rooms and related field‑house improvements at Central, site work and turf behind West High bleachers, batting cages and gym area repairs, and painting and graphics at North, district facilities staff told the board.
Josh (facilities staff) explained the scope of the three‑site package to trustees: “So at West, there's turf being put down behind the bleachers. There's a short wall being put up around the stairwell, up behind the bleachers of the gym and some batting cages going in. At North there's going to be some painting and graphics that take place and, the largest portion of the project is going to be the central field house. So there will be locker rooms put in there, meeting rooms, surf put in, batting cages, maybe some weight equipment brought in.”
Director Poston moved the contract award to Bill Bruce Builders; the motion was seconded and approved by voice vote. Director Barnes asked why several usual bidders were not present; Josh told the board the project size may not be large enough to attract some larger firms and that bid turnout had been strong for the category.
Trustees also approved a separate award to Trane US Inc. for HVAC and controls for the field‑house element. Josh said the HVAC work is needed because converting a warehouse‑style field house to locker rooms and occupied spaces requires dedicated ventilation, odor control and air‑exchange systems.
Board members asked where equipment currently stored on the site would be relocated during work. Josh said district maintenance will move large items (plow trucks, district chairs, etc.) into a garage building behind the bus lot and will “do some touch up work to that building, some new garage doors to insulate it.”
Both contracts passed on voice votes with motions from trustees; no roll‑call tallies were recorded in the meeting minutes.
District staff said work will be coordinated to reduce disruption to summer programs and to prepare facilities for the coming school year.
