Council backs Talbot Bicycle & Pedestrian committee92s application for Safe Streets planning grant

The Talbot County Council on June 10 approved a request from the county92s Bicycle & Pedestrian Advisory Committee to submit a Safe Streets for All planning grant application and to provide a letter of support.
Heather Grant, chair of the advisory committee, told council the committee was established to develop a countywide bicycle and pedestrian master plan and lacks the in-house transportation planning expertise to produce a data-driven safety action plan. Cassandra Van Hoosier of Economic Development and Tourism explained the grant is a planning award of up to $300,000 and requires a 20% match, which can be cash or in-kind (staff or volunteer time).
Council member Lesher, the council92s liaison to the committee, said the planning effort should include countywide priorities such as state-led corridor projects so the county can provide local input. A motion to approve the letter of support and permission for the committee to apply passed by voice vote: Callahan Aye; Stepp Aye; Lesher Aye; Milke Aye; Haef Aye.
Committee leaders requested council consideration of contingency funds if a cash match becomes necessary; council indicated willingness to consider contingency use if needed. The grant application deadline is June 26; staff and committee members said they were requesting council support on short notice to meet that deadline.
