The Rock Island City Council on June 9 voted to proclaim June 2025 as Pride Month in the city.
The proclamation was read by Mayor Ashley Harris and recognizes the historical roots of Pride in the Stonewall riots and the contributions of Rock Island’s LGBTQ community to the city’s cultural and civic life.
Adam Peters, director of operations at Clock Inc., the Rock Island LGBTQ community center, told the council the center provides "vital resources, mental health services, empowerment programs, and community advocacy," and called Pride "more than just a celebration. It's a reminder of what's possible when a community chooses inclusion over indifference." Peters also thanked the city for "recognizing Pride Month in a time when doing so is not always easy or popular."
Peters cited recent local events — including the Quad Cities Pride Alliance’s Pridefest and other regional partners — as evidence of an active support network in the Quad Cities. He urged continued local leadership to counter what he described as increasing hostility and misinformation toward LGBTQ people nationally.
The proclamation encourages Rock Islanders to "recognize the enduring efforts and ongoing contributions of the LGBTQ communities within our city and our country," and is dated June 2025 with Mayor Ashley Harris as the signatory.
City staff also noted a related street closure resolution on the agenda later in the meeting to accommodate the Unity Pride parade on June 14; council approved that closure as presented.
