Board approves gate and garage changes at 511 East Palace with conditions on design and materials

The Historic District Review Board approved updates at 511 East Palace Avenue on conditions designed to keep the changes compatible with the downtown historic district.

Senior Planner Romero presented the application seeking replacement of a pedestrian gate, a vehicular gate and repainting of the garage doors; the applicant also proposed to relocate a mailbox. Staff noted the proposed pedestrian gate draws from a nonlocal ornamental style and advised the board that the city—s guidelines favor fenestrated gates that complement existing wall and fence treatments.

Owner Frederick Bridal said the garage doors would be painted in-kind and that the applicant is willing to add fenestration to the vehicular gate and work with staff on designs for the pedestrian gate. After public comment — including a speaker noting a similar decorative gate had been approved elsewhere — the board approved the application with three conditions: the pedestrian gate be modified to reflect New Mexico traditional details and include fenestration, the vehicular gate be redesigned consistent with that approach and approved by staff, and the garage door and trim colors be as agreed and recorded in the staff file. The board also approved the proposed standalone mailbox at the proposed location.
