Montezuma County approves lodgers‑tax grants; board asks voters could raise tax cap to 6%

Montezuma County commissioners on June 10 accepted the Lodgers Tax Committee’s recommendations for this year’s grant awards, allocating nearly the entire lodgers‑tax fund to local events and tourism organizations.
Commissioners reviewed recommended awards presented in a workshop the previous day: Finish Line Racers $3,000; Montezuma Heritage Museum $10,000; Mancos Chamber $59,000; Galloping Goose $7,500; Butte Mountain Rodeo $5,000; Dolores Chamber $59,000; Mancos Creative District $16,000; Cortez Cultural Center dances $20,000; Mesa Verde Country $125,000. Commissioners said the list exhausts all but $271.54 of the current lodgers‑tax balance.
Commissioners also noted a recent change in state law allows counties to raise their lodging tax cap from 2% to 6%. The board said any change would require voter approval and discussed whether to place a measure on a future ballot to “stay in pace with the counties around us.” No ballot decision was made at the June 10 meeting; commissioners said they will discuss the question later in the year.
The board then moved, seconded and voted to accept the Lodgers Tax Committee’s expenditure recommendations as presented.
