The Worcester Historical Commission approved a certificate of appropriateness May 22 for a new exterior fire escape at 245 Pleasant Street after the property owner reported parts of the old deck had fallen during heavy weather.
The owner, who did not provide a full name on the record, told the commission the previous external stair had partially collapsed after rain and the replacement must meet current building code. "Part of the deck was fell down," the owner said, and added the code requires a 36-inch stair width, which affected the proposed layout.
Commissioners examined proposed access and clearance with the driveway and concrete landing; staff and commissioners confirmed the plan would provide access to the second floor and that the concrete slab would serve as the lower landing. A motion for a certificate of appropriateness passed on a roll-call vote. Commissioner Santos, Commissioner Holnarski, Commissioner Thierman, Commissioner Northway, Commissioner Andre, Commissioner Taylor and Chair Diane Long all voted yes.
When asked whether a demolition delay was required, staff said the stair appears to date from after 1975; as a result, a demolition delay was not imposed. The owner was thanked and told the project could proceed through normal building-permit channels now that the commission's approval was recorded.
