Council authorizes mayor to sign Stockton Lake water storage agreement as phase one of long-term supply plan

Assistant Public Works Director Travis Gossey told the council that council bill 20 25-20 authorizes the mayor to execute a water storage agreement with the Southwest Missouri Joint Municipal Water Utility Commission. The contract would let Nixa purchase a 1,000,000-gallon portion of a Corps of Engineers–authorized 38,000,000-gallon allocation from Stockton Lake as part of a multi-entity arrangement.
Gossey described the agreement as a pass-through contract administered by the Joint Municipal Utility Commission and said the item is the first phase of a long-term project. After purchasing the allocation, the city’s next steps would be engineering design and infrastructure to transfer the water from Stockton Lake to Nixa.
Gossey characterized the project as long-term and intended to secure additional water resources to support future growth. Councilmember comments included lighthearted references to future benefits and no substantive opposition was recorded. Councilmember Darlene Graham moved the ordinance and Councilmember Aaron Peterson seconded; roll call recorded affirmative votes and the motion carried.
