District architects and Neuqua administrators presented June 9 plans to expand Neuqua Valley High School so it can accommodate the freshman class currently assigned to the Birkett (Freshman) Center.
The proposal includes two major exterior additions — a two‑story expansion at the rear with science labs and classrooms and a front addition that will house centralized staff offices, a secure vestibule and meeting spaces. Architects said the design creates roughly ten more classrooms than earlier master‑plan estimates by consolidating staff areas and converting some existing staff rooms into instructional space.
The rear addition (near bus drop‑off) would add three science labs (two life/earth science labs and one physical science lab with prep rooms), five classrooms and a flexible collaborative “breakout” space intended for small‑group work or blended instruction. The front addition expands the building footprint toward the street and places larger staff offices there; the plan anticipates two staff hubs (one on each level) that would each hold about 45 staff members, freeing space inside the building for student use. The design also relocates intervention and academic resource centers closer to the main hall for easier student access.
Neuqua’s implementation timeline calls for construction of the two additions and the turf field replacement to begin in spring; major interior renovation phases would be scheduled so that the additions can be occupied at the start of the 2027–28 school year, allowing freshmen to move to the main campus that year. Architects said most renovation work will be staged across three summers, with one regular school year (2026–27) where ongoing construction occurs while school is in session.
Administrators acknowledged operational challenges during transition: bus‑drop changes, new morning entry points, and crowded passing periods and lunch lines when the additional class joins the main building. They said building leaders and staff will form committees to plan logistics, and that Dean’s assistants and other staff will manage revised drop‑off and bus procedures. Neuqua assistant principal David Perry said the design aims to reduce congestion by adding connecting hallways and removing underused lockers to widen circulation.
Athletics and site work are part of the plan: a turf replacement in the stadium is included, and site remediation and contractor staging areas will be used during construction. Presenters said they’re coordinating with the district’s construction manager and will provide community notices in advance of any traffic or drop‑off changes.
The board heard the presentation but did not vote on the Neuqua plan at the June 9 meeting.
