Graduating seniors at Wayne School of Technical Arts received a range of academic honors and scholarships during the school's June 9, 2025 commencement, with students cited for AP Capstone participation, Beta Club membership, North Carolina academic honors, and multiple college scholarships.
Why it matters: The recognitions and scholarship awards were highlighted individually for many students and point to postgraduation plans that include college enrollment and scholarship aid that will reduce students' tuition costs.
Students were recognized for national and state academic programs: AP Capstone distinctions (AP Seminar and AP Research), Beta Club membership, North Carolina academic scholar designations, the Global Language Endorsement (North Carolina's seal of biliteracy), and the Daughters of the American Revolution American History Award. School emcee Paul Fares, a graduating senior, outlined the award criteria for the audience.
The program listed specific scholarship amounts and awards for named students. Examples recorded in the ceremony include:
- Amelia Juliette Gorgon, a senior and multiple-award recipient, was announced as attending the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with an academic scholarship of $6,500 per year (total $26,000).
- Paul Santiago Juarez, a senior and North Carolina Governor's School attendee, will attend UNC Chapel Hill and received a Carolina Covenant scholarship valued at $8,400 for his year; he also received a one-time grant to support participation in a Carolina global launch program estimated at $20,000 covering tuition, fees and housing for study abroad in Costa Rica.
- Tamaya Lynn James and other named seniors were awarded the Bison Benefit scholarship to attend Wayne Community College; the scholarship was described as covering tuition and fees for four semesters totaling just over $5,000.
- Omar Antonio Rodriguez Velez was announced as attending West Chester University with an academic excellence scholarship valued at $4,000 per year (total $16,000).
- Nina Patricia Yvonne Ortiz Sabaldica was announced as attending the University of Oregon with a scholarship valued at $7,500 per year (total $30,000).
The ceremony also described Latin honors (cum laude distinctions) and AP Scholar recognitions; the AP Capstone program was identified as a partnership with the College Board and requires successful AP Seminar and AP Research scores plus additional AP exams for the capstone diploma. The Global Language Endorsement was described according to North Carolina rules for demonstrating English and world-language proficiency.
The awards portion was presented by seniors and a school counselor, who called each honored student to the stage and summarized honors and college plans. These recognitions are ceremonial acknowledgments of student achievement and scholarship awards; no board or institutional policy changes were announced during the ceremony.
