Superintendent reports preliminary $14 million carryover; county cut reduces local appropriation

Pittsylvania County Schools staff told the board on June 10 that the district’s year‑end financial position shows an estimated preliminary carryover of about $14 million, with much of that figure representing grant funds received but not yet spent.
Miss Worley, reporting on the year‑end budget and the 2025–26 planning, said the Virginia governor and General Assembly adopted a budget and the county supervisors adopted a local budget on May 20 with a cut of about $378,000 to the local appropriation the school division requested. Staff adjusted next year’s budget to reflect that cut and indicated they plan additional adjustments as further one‑time items and insurance renewals are finalized.
Worley told the board the carryover includes textbook funds, construction projects, replacement vehicles and the portion of state funds tied to the planned employee bonus; the district is also awaiting roughly $9 million in state reimbursements. She said June payrolls for 10‑ and 11‑month employees had been posted and that regular July obligations (property insurance, workers’ compensation) were being processed.
Board members asked whether final insurance and benefit numbers would be available at the July meeting; staff said they expect to have health and dental renewal details by July. Worley said she will return with any necessary budget adjustments for the next fiscal year once final figures are available.
The board received the report and directed staff to continue budget monitoring and to present updates at the July meeting.
