The Wausau Common Council unanimously approved a finance resolution on June 10 to add $250,000 to the 2025 budget for additional hot‑mix mill-and-overlay street maintenance.
Council and staff discussed how streets would be selected. Public Works staff said they maintain a “wish list” of candidate streets and evaluate street condition, underground infrastructure (including recent or planned lead service line replacements), drainage and cost efficiency when prioritizing overlay work. Staff said the city will perform much of the work in-house to stretch the added dollars and estimated the funds will cover roughly two miles (about 20–25 blocks) of standard residential overlay, depending on whether work is partial or full-block.
Alders urged attention to one-block residential streets that have recurring spring damage and to blocks currently torn up for utility work. Alder Larson and others asked that the Infrastructure & Facilities Committee review the staff list and that staff consider streets where recent utility repairs make overlay most effective; Alder Rasmussen noted staff had prioritized streets to avoid undermining overlays where lead-service replacements were still planned.
The resolution passed 11–0. Staff said they will bring a proposed list back to the Infrastructure & Facilities Committee for review; council indicated the committee’s review need not typically return to full council unless major changes arise.
