"I'm very excited about Madison and about the work that the transportation director can do," Spieler said.
The nomination matters because the transportation director will help oversee transit policy and projects the committee and council consider. Committee members asked about how to respond to riders and neighborhoods that lost convenient stops during recent network changes.
Alder Evers asked how elected officials and staff should respond to residents who feel a redesign reduced their coverage. Spieler said network redesigns inevitably involve trade-offs: "If you want to make things better for the vast majority of riders, you nevertheless are going to end up making things worse for somebody. That is just the nature of trade offs." He added that continuous review and community input matter: "Running something teaches you things you don't know when you're just planning it."
Alder Madison asked a brief, nontechnical question about Spieler's personal impressions of the city; Spieler said he enjoyed Madison's activity and setting and joked that he was looking forward to "no hurricane season." The exchange was part of a short public introduction before the committee voted.
After the questions the committee moved to adopt the confirmation recommendation. The motion was moved and seconded and, with no objection, the committee recorded a unanimous vote in favor of recommending confirmation.
