Board approves change order to reconstruct Jackson Street after winter water-main failure

Port Washington’s Board of Public Works on June 10 approved a change order with PTS to reconstruct a section of Jackson Street damaged by a February water-main break.
Staff said the break, aided by frost, allowed water to migrate underground and cause multiple failures, including damage to the sanitary sewer and voids beneath the pavement. The approved work calls for full reconstruction from Webster Street to Hillcrest Court, including replacement of the water main and the damaged sanitary sewer.
In a presentation, staff described repeated excavation to locate the leak and noted that initial temporary repairs did not provide a stable base. “This is a complete reconstruction of this section of the roadway from Webster Street to Hillcrest Court,” the presenter said. Staff further told the board the final price from PTS was about $50,000 less than the engineer’s estimate and that the water utility will pay the water portion while the sanitary sewer fund covers its share of work.
PTS is finishing another local project in the next two to three weeks, and staff said work on Jackson Street will commence after that contractor completes its current assignments and after required DNR approvals for water and sewer work are secured.
Committee member Haley moved to approve the staff recommendation for a change order with PTS; Alderman Miller seconded the motion and it carried by voice vote.
